The Wells Fargo Revolver was a special variant of the so called Baby Dragoon Revolver, which by itself was a civil variant of the heavier Dragoon Revolvers in caliber .44. The Baby Dragoon was chambered in .31 caliber and had thus a lighter handling characteristic. The gun was well received by many people, among them the miners while the goldrush in California was taking place. One specialty of the Wells Fargo model was the absence of a loading lever under the barrel! This made the gun harder to load, but once it was, the gun was slicker and easier to pull, with no hooks able to catch on clothing - a big advantage in case of a sudden attack by villains or even dangerous game. The settlers that „conquered“ the West were by no means all gunslinging cowboys or grim sheriffs, rather brave farmer, cratfmen or merchants, appreciating a concealable and easy to shoot gun.
For many people discovering and traveling the West, including the members of the Pony Express, the Wells Fargo Colt was the weapon of choice. Legend claims that officers of the army were carring a pocket model of this style in case of serious injury, then being able to hold the surgeon off amputating a limb.
